Dana Iles walks in footsteps of U.S. leaders

Farmington, Michigan---Dana Iles, 10-years-old, soon to be a sixth grade Power Middle School student, walked in the footsteps of U.S. leaders this past week while attending the six-day Junior National Young Leaders Conference (JrNYLC) in Washington, D.C.

Dana was nominated by a Gill Elementary fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Carol Greening, to attend the conference based on outstanding academic achievements and leadership potential. Dana was selected to represent Gill Elementary School and the state of Michigan at the Junior National Young Leaders Conference (JrNYLC). Dana joined a select group of 250 middle school students from around the country for the educational experience of a lifetime. Together, with other high-achieving students, from all over the nation, she took part in an event that will help shape her future and introduced her to American leadership and history.

Mini-Marathon Kick-Off Big Success

Our students became mini-marathoners today as they completed the first steps toward their goal to each run, walk (or wheel*) a total of 26.2 miles over the summer vacation – the same distance as an official marathon.

The entire student body, more than 500 students, logged the first half-mile of the inaugural Mustang Mini-Marathon at an outdoor assembly held at the school today.  The program has an important mission: boost youth fitness while raising money for school programs.

The need for fitness-oriented programs such as this was highlighted by a recent federal government study that found 32 percent of children are overweight or obese.  This has both immediate and long-term serious health impacts, according to the Center for Disease Control.
