Getting Involved with our Goverment:
As parents we have a daily impact on the lives of our children and school. As citizens and community members we have the responsibility to be aware of local, state, and national issues and policies that affect our children and community. It's difficult and time-consuming to be on top of every issue affecting education. This page is intended to provide you information about current legislation that may effect our school and/or students.
IMPORTANT PENDING LEGISLATION!
HB 5111 – This bill would retain third grade students who do not meet a benchmark score on the third grade state wide reading test. Just to give a little more information. Yes, If a 3rd grader does not meet the benchmark on the BRAND NEW state reading test that our students have NEVER seen before. Oh and did we mention the new test is to be taken entirely on the computer! They will be retained in the 3rd grade and there will be very little your child's teacher or the school district can do to appeal that action on behalf of you and your child
.
Your child will have one chance to take this test, if they do not pass they will be retained in 3rd grade:
-It does not matter what their reading performance is daily in class.
- It does not matter if your child just had a bad day.
- Does your child read well, but is just not a good test taker? Does not matter, if they do not pass they will be retained.
- Does your child read well, but struggles with using a mouse or does not have a lot of experience navigating computer screens? The new state reading test will be taken entirely on the computer. If your child does not meet the state benchmark, they will be retained in 3rd grade!

Other Legislation being considered:
HB 5112 – Change the current systems of rating schools (Focus/Prioity/Rewards and Top to Bottom Rankings) to a letter grade. It would also be the third type of rating system used for schools in a five year time span. This would make comparisons to previous years difficult and add to the confusion that already exists as to ratings.
SB0945 – This bill would move all control of the state wide school assessments (MEAP. MLPP) from the Department of Education to the Department of Treasury. Education officials would no longer have a say in the assessment process.
Local Government:
Farmington Public Schools (FPS) - FPS serves 12,000+ students ranging in age from newborn to senior citizen living in Farmington, Farmington Hills, and a portion of West Bloomfield. About 100,000 residents live in this suburban area.
FPS Board of Education (BOE) - The Board of Education serves as a trustee for the Farmington Public School District. Board members express and represent the views of the community in matters affecting education. They set policy, approve educational goals and curriculum changes, and act on recommendations of the Superintendent of Schools.
